Is Your Vehicle Winter Ready?

Hopefully you've already seen our Ultimate Winter Travel Checklist - here's one for your vehicle!

Check your tyre tread

The UK limit is 1.6mm for cars, but tyre manufacturers recommend a deeper tread for winter driving safety – always check the handbook for the vehicle you are driving.

Check your tyre pressure

Refer to the vehicles user manual or manufacturers website for the right tyre pressure for the road conditions.

Consider changing for winter tyres if you regularly drive in heavy, winter conditions in rural landscapes.

Keep your fluids topped up

You will use more washer fluid during winter periods and your anti-freeze can become diluted over time, be sure to keep both topped up and add the relevant solutions.

Check/clean/replace windscreen wipers

Ensure there is no damage to the wiper blades such as nicks or chunks missing to ensure they are effective when you need them most.

Check your windscreen for chips

Tiny chips or cracks can grow and spread during the colder weather, and small chips (under a £1 coin) can often be repaired – a sound investment for winter!

Check when you’re most recent service was/is next due

Your vehicle will be much better prepared for winter driving conditions the more recently it was serviced – most garages will include winter safety checks at this time of year, or ask for them when you book your service.

Check all your lights work and are clean

Often overlooked, dirty lights are much less effective and can easily pick up dirt and salt deposits during the winter period.

Keep the outside of your vehicle clean of grit and debris

Giving your vehicle the occasional once over means you are more likely to spot any problems and prevent long term damage.

Plan your winter journeys carefully, taking into consideration alternative routes if necessary, have an atlas or a print-out of the route – don’t just rely on sat nav!
