The History of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Written by Jessica Fidoe on 22nd January 2019

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a van that has really set the pace and tone for large vans. And as such, their innovative concept, quality and high standards have allowed the Sprinter name to be adopted universally to describe this size and style of van across the world.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was born in the spring of 1995 and began the impressive initiative by Mercedes-Benz in the van and truck sector.

Taking inspiration from the technical concept of the T1, the Sprinter was revolutionised for a new market with the combination of a unibody construction, high-traction rear-wheel drive, modern suspension and independent front wheel suspension, excellent safety equipment and powerful engines was totally unique for the time.

It was also the first of its kind to bear the Mercedes star and to have a name rather than a set of numerals and letters for its model.

In the first full year of production in 1996, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Dusseldorf produced more than 100,000 vans. Fast forward through its impressive history, and they have now sold more than three million vans across the world.

But why is the Sprinter so popular? Easy! It never stands still. It always develops for the demands of its drivers. Now the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van offers three wheelbases, four lengths and three height variants and gross weights from 3.2 to 5.0 tonnes. The development work really doesn’t stop there! From the interiors of the cab, the space in the back, it’s engine and economical value is always being evaluated.

At VMS Vehicle Hire we recognise quality which is why we ensure we always have Sprinter vans available for all of our customers. You can hire a Sprinter from as little as £56/day.
