Best ways to transport a christmas tree

It’s the most wonderful time of the year which can only mean one thing… it’s time to get that Christmas tree! Read our tips for the best ways to transport a Christmas Tree by Van and Car this season.

Now, this guide is for the 8 million Brits who make the traditional pilgrimage to choose a real Christmas tree every year and for those who want to purchase their first!

Choosing and buying a Christmas Tree is the easy part, the hard part is figuring out how to get that tree home (especially when your going for something above 4ft!).

Here at VMS Vehicle Hire, we understand what you need during this busy time of year, which is why we have put together the best ways to transport a Christmas tree by van and car.

First of all, choose your vehicle. Be realistic though. Just because you have the space for a 7ft tree in your home, doesn’t mean your normal car will be able to transport it in the safest way.

Perhaps you need to consider hiring a van or larger car with roof rack facilities if you don’t already have those to hand? If so, booking ahead of time will mean you’ll have less stress on the big day.

If your picking a car

You’ll need to bring some tools with you.

  • Make sure you bring some form of blanket to put between the tree and the roof to avoid any scratches.
  • Bring plenty of rope with you, so that you can securely fasten the tree to the roof. The last thing you want is to see is that tree rolling off as you go round a roundabout!
  • A roof rack will be your saving grace when transporting a Christmas Tree and makes attaching it far easier.
  • If you don’t have a roof rack, tie the tree down to the roof whilst all your car doors are open - don’t just tie it through your windows as this will not be secure enough.
  • Position the tree with the trunk facing the front of your car as this will prevent wind damage to the needles and make for a much smoother ride.

If your picking a van

  • If you are hiring a van, make sure the storage capacity is big enough to hold the size of tree you want to buy. Whether it’s a pickup truck, transit or something else.
  • You’ll still want a blanket between the tree and the floor of the van to minimise damage to the pine needles.
  • Apart from that - you are good to go! Just make sure you drive slowly!

No matter what option you go for, VMS Vehicle Hire have all the facilities and vehicles you will need to make picking up a Christmas Tree simple and fun.
