10 Tips to avoid road rage

Road rage is defined as a “sudden & violent anger provoked in a motorist by the actions of another driver”. In the UK, road rage has become one of the main causes of car accidents, and 80.4% of British drivers report being the target of it frequently.

VMS has compiled a 10 tips to help you keep a cool head and ensure a safe driving journey for all.

  1. Follow the rules. Don’t cut in front of your fellow drivers and respect the rights of way.
  2. Small misjudgement errors can happen to everyone, including yourself. If this occurs, assess the safety of the situation, wave an apology and carry on.
  3. Stress has been linked to a large amount of car-crashes. Don’t start your journey angry, rushed or emotionally drained. Instead, try to take a few deep breaths and calm down, or simply don’t get behind the wheel.
  4. Be predictable. Remember to check all your blind spots and use all regular signals to indicate your movements to drivers around.
  5. When facing a stressful environment like heavy traffic jam, listen to calming music. Stay alert but keep calm as much as you can.
  6. Better safe than sorry. Don’t hesitate to call your insurance if you are unsure about a situation.
  7. When hiring, ensure you have insurance cover. VMS includes this into all hire rates at no additional cost for customers not self insured.
  8. Be the better man, don’t let your pride dictate your driving style. If a disrespectful driver cuts in your lane, let him pass and stay focussed on the road ahead.
  9. If you feel unsafe or threatened by another driver, call or drive to the nearest police station whilst staying the speed limits. Do not get out of your car or open the doors until you feel safer.
  10. Keep your horn for defensive driving purposes, or to alert other drivers, not to scold them. Politeness is key.

Being respectful on the road is the first step to a better and overall safer driving journey. Whether you are driving a rental car or your own, it is simply not worth endangering yourself and facing costly consequences of a small anger slip.
